12/14/2023 0 Comments Military museum blue tanksRomania also had a developed local arms industry and although it could never supply all the weapons needed to equip modern mass armies and thus foreign equipment had to be brought in, the Romanian industry actually managed to produce a number of weapons locally including a tank destroyer and artillery/anti-tank guns. Romania is a very overlooked country when it comes to WWII, little is it known that it was actually a major axis partner in terms of manpower and even the 4th largest contributor of men (after USSR, USA and UK) to the allied cause once the country changed sides. A number of fighting vehicles are preserved there so I figured I would do a feature on Romanian WWII tanks with pictures from the museum. However the really interesting thing is their tank and artillery park which is pretty massive with plenty of WWII stuff. Being partly inside and outside the Roman empire, that is also a focus area. Unfortunately all displays are in Romanian and thus not very accessible but they follow a timeline so anyone with a bit of background information should be able to follow. However the museum as a whole tries to deal with military history/war from stone age and forward starting with displays of flint arrow heads and axes. It hosts a strong background for WWI era items and uniforms as Romania as part of the Entente and joined the war in 1916. It is known has the Muzeul Militar Naţional “Regele Ferdinand I” after its’ founder Ferdinand I as early as 1923. But there is a major military museum with a very interesting collection to be found in Bucharest. Romania is generally a very overlooked nation when it comes to military history at least in Western Europe.
